Karoliina Paasonen

Karoliina Paasonen is a Finnish film director and cinematographer. In 2008, she created her first short film, Aura’s Cabin, set in a remote forest cabin. This early work marked the emergence of her distinctly Scandinavian visual language - characterized by simplicity, restraint, and atmospheric imagery. Although filmed in Berlin-Spandau, Karoliina’s atmospheric visual storytelling and distinctive cinematic signature gave the film the feeling of having been created deep within the forests of Scandinavia. The project laid the foundation for an artistic style that continues to define her work today: visually driven, emotionally resonant, and rooted in the power of images to tell stories beyond words.

At the heart of the film was a woman dressed in white, moving between inner worlds, memory, and reality. Her husband is no longer present, and she drifts between past and present, fantasy and reality, carried by visual dissolves and a highly cinematic narrative that communicates through images rather than explanatory dialogue.

Throughout nearly three decades of artistic work, Karoliina has maintained a consistent focus on creating powerful, independent imagery capable of telling stories without words. Her films and photographic works are driven by atmosphere, composition, sound, and emotion rather than conventional narration. Central to her artistic vision is the sensitive female protagonist - serving as a vessel for inner landscapes, emotional transitions, and quiet transformations.
